What This Is

Before 2022, using AI was straightforward: send a string of text, get a string back —essentially a high-end translation API. Developers then started asking whether multiple AI calls could be chained into a pipeline: extract key points, then write a summary, then translate. That is the pipeline model—formally, a DA G (directed acyclic graph)—and it was LangChain's original core proposition.

The problem with pipelines is that they only move forward. If a step goes wrong mid-run, there is no mechanism to back up and redo it. The fix is to add a backward-pointing arrow inside the flow graph—letting the AI decide "that step wasn 't good enough, try again." But what makes that judgment call? Not an if-else block written by a programmer, but the AI model itself. That means part of the control flow is now delegated to the model rather than to code.

Taking it one step further: in late 2022, Google published a paper introducing the ReAct mechanism (Reasoning + Acting interleaved), which has the model alternate between "think one step" and "do one step" until it determines the task is complete. Wrap one more layer around that—an Agent Loop, a persistent wait-and-respond cycle—and you have the basic skeleton of today 's AI coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor: Agent Loop wrapping ReAct wr apping DAG, three layers nested inside each other.

How the Industry Sees It

Pro ponents argue that this architecture is what genuinely transformed AI from an answering tool into an execution tool. A user says "write me a login feature," and the AI decomposes the steps, invokes tools, validates results, and iterates on corrections—none of which was achievable in the pipeline era. This also explains why AI coding assistants became dramatically more useful over the past year: the architecture changed, not just the underlying model.

What we think deserves equal attention, however, is the instability baked into this design : the middle layer makes decisions autonomously, which means you cannot fully predict which path it will take. Developers must manually impose a hard cap on the maximum number of iterations; without one, the model can loop indefinitely on a sub-task. This is not a theoretical risk—in poorly designed Agent products it is already a documented source of production incidents. Some engineers remain skeptical for this reason: handing control flow to the model is, in essence, substit uting "the model is smart enough" for "the logic is rigorous enough." In high-stakes scenarios, that is a bet that may not be worth making.

What This Means for Ordinary People

For enterprise IT: When evaluating or building AI workflow tooling, the ability to retry and self-correct is now a baseline requirement, not a differentiating feature. At the same time, teams must track the operational cost of this mechanism—every additional iteration the AI runs consumes another API call and incurs another charge .

For individual professionals: When an AI assistant "spins in circles" or progressively makes things worse, the model has not suddenly gotten dumber. What has happened is that the loop at the architecture layer was not properly terminated. Recognizing this distinction helps you decide when to cut the process short and reissue a cleaner instruction rather than continuing to wait.

For the consumer market: "Autonomously completing multi-step tasks" is rapidly becoming the central selling point of AI products. Consumers need to learn to distinguish between them: is the advertised "automation" genuine dynamic decision-making, or a fixed pipeline dressed up in AI branding? The gap in reliability and applicable scope between the two is significant.
