1. My AI bill suddenly became a multiple-choice question
Last Wednesday morning I stared at my invoice for 10 minutes. Anthropic dropped Claude Opus 5.5, and an hour later OpenAI fired back with GPT-6 Sol and Luna. Both claimed 40%-50% cheaper.
I was genuinely thrown off — I use AI to write Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) copy, reply to client WeChat messages, tighten up contract wording. Each task runs me a few cents. But when I tossed "which one do we switch to?" into my 3-person group chat, Lao Li (handles customer support) replied: "Boss, should we add a new feature?" Xiaomin (does content) fired back: "Stop fussing, just fix that batch of images first."
2. So what actually is this price drop?
Short version: the two biggest AI companies announced on the same day that the same money now buys more AI work. Claude's new version is 40% cheaper and 30% faster than the old one; OpenAI straight up halved their prices.
A few real scenes from people I know: my friend A-Lin in Hangzhou runs a Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) agency. She used to pay roughly $11 a month to have GPT draft 50 posts. Now similar quality might run her $5-ish. Then there's Lao Zhou, an indie dev in Shenzhen — he leans on Claude to write code and debug (find and fix bugs). His bill was about $21/month. After this cut, he's thinking of throwing more repetitive work at AI.
The official blog posts also stressed one thing: writing got stronger — long conversations hold context better, wander off-topic less. I learned this the hard way. I once asked AI to write product descriptions, and by the third one it was inventing prices out of thin air. So that improvement actually matters to me.
3. So do I do anything today?
Replication cost, broken down for you (and me):
- Money: $0 (no spend, just sign up and poke around)
- Time: 30 minutes (sign up + ask the same prompt on each)
- Technical barrier: if you can chat on WeChat, you can do this
- First step: open Claude (claude.ai) or ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), sign up, click "New Chat" in the top-left
I'm not going to tell anyone to switch today — if your current tool is running fine, don't mess with it. But if your AI bill has been quietly nagging at you, spend half an hour trying the new ones. If they suck, close the tab.
4. What I'm doing at each stage
Just starting out (0 clients): Stick with the free tier. Both Claude and ChatGPT have free quotas. Figure out "what can AI actually do for me" before pulling out a credit card. Don't pay on day one.
Got 1-2 clients: You're probably starting to drop tens to low-hundreds a month. What worked for me was a simple spreadsheet — log monthly spend, log what it was spent on. Next time a price drop or new version lands, you'll instantly see what you actually need.
Scaling up: This is where a price drop hits hardest — same budget runs way more automation. Picture letting AI handle 80% of routine inquiries, leaving the gnarly ones for humans. But if right now you're still scrambling to keep up with orders, chasing the new version is a distraction. Get the workflow smooth first.
