Last week Linhao excitedly showed me the V0 landing page he'd built. He posted it to a paid community — three potential customers bounced within 10 seconds.

I've made the same mistake myself. Last year I used AI to build a course sales page and the conversion rate landed at 0.8% — even lower than a page I'd handwritten. A designer friend gently told me: "Your page… looks too obviously AI-made."

It's not that your product is broken — the "Slop UI" (mass-produced AI interface) smell is just too strong. Visitors have seen it a thousand times.

So what is Slop UI? Why do visitors bounce on sight?

Slop UI is a term blowing up in design circles lately — it describes interfaces AI spits out in one click, with zero human polish. Of the 10 giveaways, these three quietly kill conversion:

1. Inter font everywhere. AI defaults to "safe" fonts like Inter and Roboto, which is why every AI landing page on Earth looks identical. My friend Azhe runs a Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) tool side hustle — after swapping in a handwritten-feel Chinese font, his page dwell time jumped 40%.

2. Gradient buttons + huge empty whitespace. Purple-to-blue gradients, buttons floating in the middle of nothing — visitors are already immune to this "premium" vibe.

3. "Empower" and "closed-loop" sprinkled everywhere. Pure AI boilerplate, no real numbers, no customer quotes, no actual scenarios. After reading, you still don't know what they solve.

Designer Xiaoyang summed it up on Jike, a Chinese social platform: "AI pages are like model apartments — pretty at first glance, but move in and there's nowhere to put your shoes."

Cost to fix today: 3 tweaks, $0, 30 minutes

Money: $0

Time: 30 minutes is enough to fix 3 spots

Technical bar: If you can type, you're in. Paste your page into V0 or Bolt (tools that turn text descriptions into pages) as the prompt, then add 3 sentences.

First step: Swap "use a gradient button" for "use one solid-color button"; swap Inter for Source Han Sans; swap "empower / closed-loop" for an actual customer quote (e.g. "helped Zhang-jie save 3 days last week").

Remember: AI gives you an unfinished apartment. You're the renovation contractor — not the building inspector.

Advice by stage

Just starting out (no clients yet): If you don't even have a page yet, I'd say use AI to spit out 3 versions, pick one, and tweak 3 spots. Skip perfect — publish first so people can find you.

Got 1–2 clients: If you're getting inquiries but not closing them, I'd really suggest pasting the customer's actual words into the copy. Real beats polished — it works harder than any AI buzzwords.

Scaling up: If you're already running ads but conversions are flat, I'd block out an afternoon to run through all 10 giveaways — or pay a designer friend around $70 to look at it for 30 minutes. That investment beats another $700 in ad spend.

Not everyone needs to fix this right now — if all your clients come through referrals and relationships, an ugly page is fine. But if you're chasing cold traffic, Slop UI will absolutely scare them off.
