Last Wednesday at 2am, a client pinged me like it was life-or-death
Last Wednesday at 2am, a long-time client messaged me out of nowhere: "Get me the proposal by 9am tomorrow." I was scrolling through old chat logs while also flipping through The Neuron's September AI tips digest — that AI Skill of the Day Digest — September 2026 (Part 2) had 13 new tricks packed in. One thought kept looping in my mind: "I'll never learn all this."
What this digest is, and who's actually using these tricks
The short version: The Neuron is a free AI tips newsletter (email subscription) out of the US. It sends one AI trick per day and rolls them up at the end of each month. The second half of September — Sept 16 to 30 — covered 13 tricks across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Jev, Codex. After reading them all, I picked the 3 most useful for us side hustlers:
- Let AI break down viral posts for you — My friend Ake runs a Xiaohongshu (RedNote) ops gig in Hangzhou. Every week she now feeds Claude her 5 viral posts and gets a 1-page SOP (standard operating procedure) out. Her words: "Used to take 2 hours to dissect one viral post. Now 10 minutes."
- Relay across multiple AIs to write proposals — Beijing-based freelance photographer Lin Yifan drafts client proposals in ChatGPT, then hands them to Claude for tone, then runs the English bit through Gemini for overseas clients. Three AIs, each handling its own leg.
- AI agent auto-replies to clients — Shenzhen one-person team "Xiaolin Bookkeeping" uses an AI agent to auto-handle 80% of WeChat inquiries. He only deals with the tricky 20% himself.
None of these 3 are flashy. (I used to think AI agents were some sci-fi magic — I botched my first attempt and realized it's just a "speak by the script" program.) They're genuinely time-saving. The other 10 in the digest lean code/dev — we don't need to touch them.
Replication cost: money, time, tech bar, first step
- Money: The digest itself is free (The Neuron is a free email sub). For ChatGPT, Claude, etc., the free tiers are enough to start. Want smoother runs? Paid tier runs ~$20/month (~140 RMB).
- Time: Reading all 13 tips takes 1–2 hours. Picking 1–2 to practice, 1 hour each — a weekend afternoon total.
- Tech bar: If you can type, you're in. No API needed (that's the handshake code that lets two apps talk to each other), no environment setup — it's just a few extra moves in tools you already use. I assumed I'd need to learn to code and got stuck for 3 days, then realized it was just copy-paste.
- First step: Open the source link, hit "Subscribe" with your email — you'll get next month's digest. Today, just click in, scan the 13 titles, pick the one that hurts most (writing copy / proposals / client replies), and click through to read.
If you're slammed right now, skipping this month is fine — the digest drops every month. No FOMO next time.
Advice by stage
- If you're just starting (no clients yet): Skip this one. Wait until you land your first paying client — without a real scenario to practice on, you'll read the tips and forget them.
- If you have 1–2 steady clients: Pick "multi-AI relay for proposals" and practice just that. When a client pings you at midnight, you'll have 3 AIs helping you save the day in parallel. This one's the highest ROI.
- If you're scaling (team of 3–5): Pick "AI agent auto-reply." Spend human hours on hard problems; let AI take the repetitive ones.
