Scene: end-of-month books make me nervous
Last month-end reconciliation, AI subscriptions burned ¥1200 — more than my rent. I asked myself: am I actually using this, or just paying for peace of mind?
If you're a non-developer founder, you've stepped in this hole too — see some new tool blow up, grab a monthly pass, use it twice, forget it exists.
What is ChatGPT Pro? Who's already using it?
ChatGPT Pro is OpenAI's premium subscription for individual users — $200/month (~¥1450). Three things beat the free version: access to the latest "reasoning models" (the GPT that thinks hard before answering), no throttling during peak hours, and much higher message limits.
Recently HN (the overseas tech forum) blew up — some said OpenAI is rolling out a $500/month premium tier, comment section full of wails: 200 already too expensive, 500 will kill us?
My friend Linda does Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) copywriting — Hangzhou local, writes 30 posts a month for 5 clients. She says Pro paid for itself in 8 months — "thinking mode" saved her the cost of an assistant. But she also admits the first 3 months she barely used it; only after figuring out how to give AI proper prompts did it actually click.
I got stuck at this step too — first month after subscribing to Pro, I'd ask "what's the weather today" daily — basically using a Ferrari to deliver takeout.
Replication cost today
Money: $200/month, about ¥1450. Expensive, definitely expensive.
Time: 1-2 weeks to figure out how to use "thinking mode" for your actual work. Don't subscribe to Pro first — use chatgpt.com free for a while to see if you really need it daily.
Technical barrier: Zero. If you can type, you can do this. No coding needed.
First step: Open chatgpt.com, sign up with email, use the free version for 7 days first (system auto-gives trial). Click "Upgrade plan" at bottom-left — you'll see Plus ($20) and Pro ($200) options. Click Plus first, don't jump straight to Pro.
Advice by stage
Just starting out (no clients yet): Don't buy. Free version is enough. Your biggest problem is finding clients, not getting better AI. Wait until you can stably land 2-3 gigs/month.
1-2 clients, monthly income under ¥10K: I'd suggest trying $20/month Plus first, get comfortable, then think about Pro. I was a "go straight to top tier" victim — sat unused for two months.
Scaling, already have a team: Pro worth considering seriously — but OpenAI doesn't allow account sharing (one account can't have multiple people logged in), so just subscribe for core members; others stay on free or Plus. Monthly math isn't as scary as you'd think.
This tool isn't for everyone. If you're thriving with hand-written emails and manual spreadsheets, no rush to try. This isn't me telling you to open your wallet — it's me asking you to get clear on what AI can actually do for you.
