Last month I was helping Laozhou with video edits and he suddenly asked if AI tools are getting pricier
Last week while editing Laozhou's talking-head video, he suddenly paused: "Why's ChatGPT hiking prices again this month? Are they running away?"
I couldn't answer him on the spot. Then I saw a news piece that finally made sense of it.
That news, in plain English
An analyst ran the numbers: by 2031, global AI companies need to pull in $6 trillion per year (about 43 trillion RMB) just to keep the data centers they're frantically building online.
What does $6 trillion look like? Roughly the size of the UK's entire GDP in 2024.
Why does this matter to you and me as small business owners? Because that money has to come from somewhere — either investors, or our subscription fees. Claude and GPT have both quietly raised prices and trimmed free tiers lately. That's not a coincidence.
I got stuck on this myself — I always assumed "cheap AI tools" was just how things were, never thinking there's a hundreds-of-billions gamble behind it.
3 things you can do today
Money: $0
Time: 30 minutes
Barrier: knowing how to read a bill, do basic math
First step: open your payment app, scroll through "AI"-related charges
Specific moves:
- List every AI tool you pay for monthly (tool name + monthly fee)
- Mark which ones you "actually use daily" vs. "signed up but barely opened"
- Cancel the barely-used ones for a month and see if your workflow collapses
Advice for friends at different stages
Just starting out (not using AI yet): It's totally fine to wait. After this price hike wave passes, getting on board might be the better deal.
Folks like Laozhou with 1-2 clients (your tools are your lifeline): I'd suggest keeping at least one domestic alternative ready, like Kimi or Tongyi Qianwen — don't pile everything on one vendor. I didn't do this, and last month when Claude got overloaded (servers too crowded, everyone slowed down), I literally couldn't work for 3 hours.
Scaling up (small team of 3-10 people): I'd suggest running the numbers this month — if every AI tool you use raised prices by 30%, can your margins still hold? If not, it's time to shift some workflows back to humans (like customer replies, first drafts), don't bet everything on the API.
