Cloudflare released its 2026 founder letter this week, dropping a set of numbers that made our editorial team stop and think: automated agent traffic will reach 1,000 times human traffic within five years — Cloudflare originally projected this for the second half of 2027, but AI's pace pulled the timeline forward to May 2026.
What this is
Cloudflare is the internet's "middle layer" — roughly 20% of global web traffic passes through its protection and acceleration services. So what it sees isn't any single company's data; it's the internet's "vital signs."
The letter delivers three key facts. First, from 2012 to 2025 — 13 years — the number of web pages was essentially stagnant or even shrinking. But from mid-2025, growth suddenly exploded. The main driver isn't "AI-generated spam content," but vibe coding (using natural language to get AI to write code for you), which has let huge numbers of non-coders start building products. Second, 7 million developers are currently building on Cloudflare's platform. Third, and most worth watching — agents (AI programs that autonomously execute tasks) are becoming the internet's primary users.
Industry view
Cloudflare's optimism has its own conflict of interest: it's the preferred deployment platform for vibe coding tools, and the more agent traffic, the more it earns. But the "tragedy of the commons" risk it raises deserves every executive's attention — imagine you ask an agent to recommend a restaurant. It will read 1,000 menus and tell you to go to the first one. The other 999 bear the traffic costs without getting any return. If no one is willing to pay for "being read by agents," the entire content ecosystem's incentive to invest will decline.
Another underappreciated fact: the internet was essentially stagnant for the past 13 years, and AI has finally made it grow again. But what's growing is "agent-consumable web pages" — not "content humans actually want to read." In the long run, quality content may actually become scarcer.
Impact on regular people
For enterprise IT: if your business depends on websites or content being recommended by agents (e-commerce, media, local services), pricing, SEO, and cost structures all need to be redesigned.
For individual careers: not knowing how to code is no longer a bottleneck for product ideas. Building internal tools or validating prototypes with vibe coding tools has a lower bar than learning advanced Excel functions.
For consumer markets: many future "small and beautiful" products will likely be made by individuals + AI. Competition will get fiercer, but homogenization will get worse too.
