What this is
Cloudflare held its 16th "Birthday Week" last week, rolling out 46 new features and products. The more telling signal isn't the volume but two announcements: first, citing third-party data, Cloudflare said AI automated traffic on the internet has surpassed human activity for the first time; second, the company has formally made the "agentic Internet" — networks where AI agents can autonomously access, decide, and transact — the new core of its business narrative.
Key releases:
- cf CLI: positioned as an "agentic command-line tool for the entire Cloudflare API," with output formats designed to be readable by both AI agents and humans.
- Forge: an open-source pipeline that auto-generates SDKs, CLIs, and documentation from API definitions.
- EmDash: an open-source content management system that calls itself the "spiritual successor" to WordPress. Its core pitch: every plugin runs in an isolated sandbox with explicit permission grants — a direct shot at WordPress's long-standing "plugin = backdoor" problem.
- VoidZero: a JavaScript toolchain that shipped 80+ updates in 4 months, with its commercial version moving to fully open source.
Industry view
Bulls argue Cloudflare is betting on the right track. If a large share of future economic activity is driven by AI agents rather than humans — ordering food, comparing prices, booking flights, submitting expenses — then Cloudflare is selling the picks and shovels. Making "humans + agents" first-class citizens in cf CLI is smart; EmDash directly tackles the plugin security problem WordPress has failed to solve for over a decade, and its practical value to SMBs may exceed any "new AI concept."
But we need three cold takes:
- Cloudflare is itself an infrastructure vendor with a strong incentive to define the "agentic Internet" narrative — don't take it at face value.
- 46 releases in a week is classic "launch-flood," where signal drowns in noise and traditional industry managers struggle to tell what's actually useful.
- The "AI traffic surpasses humans" milestone deserves a discount: a meaningful share is crawlers and SEO bots, not genuine "agent economic activity." Cloudflare's cited methodology needs ongoing scrutiny — don't get carried away by a single data point.
Impact on regular people
For enterprise IT and digital leaders: your company's website, APIs, and data structures may need to be redesigned "to be read by AI." After SEO comes GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — making sure AI agents can correctly understand and recommend your products will become a required discipline.
For individual careers: the accelerating "agentic Internet" means more SaaS tools will quietly run hidden AI agents on your behalf. The ordinary employee's workflow will be silently reshuffled — "I clicked once, and 7 AIs ran in the background" will become routine.
For consumer markets: the recommendations we scroll through will increasingly be selected by AI on our behalf — or by AI on behalf of other AIs. Decision power is shifting partly out of consumers' hands and into the training data and incentive structures of AI agents.
