The work came out fast — minutes. But when the client said "this isn't what I wanted," it hit harder than my handwritten version — because I had to admit, I hadn't fully figured out what I wanted either.
Back in the day, we used "doing" as the gatekeeper. Writing was slow, drawing was slow, so there was time to think. AI kicked that barrier flat. Work comes out in minutes now, but "figuring it out" froze me for an entire night.

I know an indie consultant named Lao Zhou. Last year he used AI to write proposals for clients — work that used to take three days got done in an hour. Three months later, the client said, "Every time I read your stuff it feels about the same — missing the line that actually gets to my heart." Lao Zhou eventually realized: the problem was never writing speed. His understanding of the client's business was skin-deep.

understanding — of your client, of the problem, of yourself — is the scarce resource.
What can you do today? Basically free. Just whether you're willing to practice.
- Cost: $0. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Doubao, or Wenxin — any chat window works
- Time: Squeeze 20 minutes during commute or lunch break
- Technical barrier: If you can send a WeChat message, you're in
- First step: Pull out something you made for a client last week (a proposal, poster, copy — anything). Write down "what exactly are they trying to solve" — 3 sentences, no more
I got stuck on this step too. Before the new year I took on a course package request and let AI write the outline directly. Five rounds of revisions. Eventually I went back to the whiteboard and rewrote "what users will do after buying." If you don't feel like doing it now, that's totally fine — the weekend works too. No deadline on this.

- Just starting, no income yet: Don't chase tools first. Get clear on the next customer or reader you'll meet, even just one line. Beats scrolling 10 prompts.
- Have 1-2 stable clients: Skim your chat history. Find the spots where you said "fine, good enough" — that's the gap your understanding missed.
- Scaling up, looking for a partner: Don't look for "someone who can use AI." Look for "someone who knows your industry + loves to dig deeper + can use AI." Understanding beats prompts, every time.
Someone in the comments wrote: "We didn't automate understanding. We just made generating faster." I'll add one thing — understanding is something AI really can't help you with. It can only take over the work after you've already figured things out.
