My Outsourcer Said 2 More Weeks—Then I Saw Bun 1.4

Last week I asked Lao Zhou, my outsourced dev, to tweak the landing page

His delivery had a word I'd never seen—Bun. I froze. That name used to float only in tech circles. Now even small-job outsourcers are on it?

I'd made this mistake before—dismissing new tools as "not my problem." Last year a friend asked me to help pick a tech stack, and I couldn't even pronounce half the names. Brutal.

What Bun 1.4 is, and who's already on it

One-liner: Bun is the engine that makes websites, mini-programs, and small AI tools run faster. In this 1.4 upgrade, what caught my eye was the AI piece—hooking up ChatGPT or Claude used to mean installing a pile of supporting libraries. Bun now bundles them for you.

A friend A Qiang runs an indie AI-tool shop in Guangzhou. He says building a small product used to need 5 supporting pieces; now 1 Bun is enough. Another friend Xiaolin runs an e-commerce store—after switching her mini-program to Bun, load time dropped from 3 seconds to under 1, and conversion rose 12%. For small businesses like ours, that kind of speed bump means a few extra orders.

The cost if I start using it today

Money: $0. Bun is completely free.
Time: 5 minutes to read this piece. For my tech collaborator to get up to speed, half a day on the new version is enough.
Technical barrier: This tool is built for developers—we don't need to learn it. But three things I'd want to know: 1) what it does; 2) it's faster than older options; 3) whether my outsource or tools are already on it.
First step: Open bun.com and skim the 30-second intro. Or next time I'm in a meeting with my tech partner, just ask: can we use Bun on this project?

Advice by stage

If I'm just starting out (no clients yet): I'd put this aside for now. Wait until I actually need to build a website, mini-program, or AI tool—then let a tech person evaluate.

If I have 1-2 clients (outsource in progress): At the next requirements meeting I'd ask: would Bun make this faster? If they can't answer, I might switch to a more cutting-edge dev.

If I'm scaling (multiple projects running in parallel): I'd have my tech co-founder spend half a day evaluating, then migrate the existing projects. I didn't ask before—and ended up paying 3x the server fees with worse conversion than peers.
