Last Wednesday at 3 AM, I almost fed my client list to a US AI
I dragged an Excel into ChatGPT — 200+ client names, phone numbers, payment records inside. The moment I hit upload, I froze: where's this data stored now? Who can see it? Could it train their next model?
This is what Mistral is betting on this week
France's Mistral released the new Large 4 model — performance reportedly close to GPT and Claude. But the real pitch is different: you pick where the AI runs and who can't access your data. French bank BNP Paribas moved their internal customer service system to Mistral last month — reason being the EU has hard rules on "data leaving Europe." French telecom Orange is also testing.
For us "1-5 person small teams": your client info doesn't have to live on a US company's servers anymore. You can pick European, Singapore-based, or even run it from your own closet.
But — I've made this mistake before: signing off after skimming the landing page
Money first: if you buy your own hardware to host Mistral Large 4, hardware + ops runs ¥300k+ per year. Go via their cloud, pay by token — processing 1M characters costs roughly ¥120-200. That's 30%-50% pricier than ChatGPT.
Tech barrier: self-hosting means Linux, servers, network security — not our turf. Cloud route needs someone legal to eyeball the contract and confirm data really doesn't cross borders.
First step: don't rush. Open chat.mistral.ai, sign up free, scrub your usual client spreadsheet (rename names to "Client A", phones to "13800000000"), run it for a week, then judge based on output and price.
Should you try now? Depends where your team sits
Just starting out (0 clients / 0 revenue): ignore this for now. ChatGPT free tier covers you for six months. Wait until you sign paying clients before talking data sovereignty.
Got 1-2 paying clients: ChatGPT / Claude is fine, but in their terms tick "data not used for training" (both paid tiers have it on by default). If any of your clients are European companies or in finance, Mistral deserves a real look.
Scaling (5+ clients, signing formal contracts): data compliance is now a sales gate, not a tech problem. Chat with a GDPR-savvy lawyer friend — saves you a week versus reading docs yourself. If clients care about "data leaving the country," have them evaluate Mistral as a backup route now.
