Doubao quietly pulled off something big this week: upgrading from a "Q&A tool" into a "computer operator" — one that can directly manipulate files on your computer, click through browsers, and build knowledge indexes inside Feishu. China's near-ubiquitous AI app has started genuinely doing work for you.
What this is
Doubao has added a "Work Mode" sitting alongside the existing chat mode. The fundamental shift: AI no longer just answers questions — it acts. It reads local files, drives browsers, invokes the Office suite, organizes desktop folders, generates and edits PPTs, cross-platform price-compares, and auto-generates Excel tables.
Key capabilities: execution on local or cloud PCs (runs even when your computer is off), a Skills system (essentially pre-built toolkits), third-party connectors (Feishu, WPS, etc.), and phone-based remote task dispatch. Free quota covers light use; heavy users need a Pro membership.
Industry view
We see this update as ByteDance porting the logic of Anthropic's Computer Use (the technology letting AI directly operate computers) and OpenAI's Operator into China's largest consumer-grade AI app. ByteDance's core advantage isn't original tech, but distribution: Doubao is already one of the most-installed Chinese AI apps, and stuffing Agent capabilities into an existing entry point carries far lower marginal cost than building from scratch.
But three things need flagging. First, this isn't original technology — international peers demonstrated similar form factors over a year ago, so this is catch-up, not leapfrog. Second, letting AI operate an entire computer means vast permission issues — file reading, browser control, third-party account authorization — and a single misconfigured permission boundary becomes a data leak. Third, demo scenarios working doesn't equal stable real-world office performance; the possibility of AI clicking the wrong button or writing data to the wrong location still exists, and corporate IT must prepare audit trails and permission isolation in advance.
Impact on regular people
For corporate IT: employees privately bringing Doubao to handle company files will increase. Governance pressure from "Bring Your Own AI" (BYOAI) rises sharply. We recommend defining data usage boundaries in advance.
For individual professionals: "operational" tasks like document organization, PPT creation, and cross-platform price comparison will be rewritten first. Time saved will flow back into higher-value judgment and decision-making.
For consumer markets: purchase decisions are shifting from "users compare themselves" to "AI compares for me and tells me the answer." The traffic-entry logic of e-commerce platforms will gradually change.
