Can’t Find Client Data? I Use This Paid Search Instead

A client asks an obscure question, and regular search buries me in ads

Last Thursday afternoon, I was working remotely on a client project from Hangzhou. A client asked about the “shared channels used by niche European and American home brands.” The first half of the regular search results was all ads. I flipped through several pages and still couldn’t find a case I could cite directly. That was when I realized that knowing how to search doesn’t mean being able to quickly find usable information.

I’ve been stuck here too: I used to think refreshing a few more times would solve it. Instead, I just burned time on irrelevant links and nearly sent the client something I hadn’t verified.

What Kagi is, and how people are already using it

Kagi is a search engine funded mainly through memberships. Its goal isn’t to give me more links; it’s to cut ads and clutter wherever possible. It feels more like a search portal for people willing to pay for higher-quality information.

I know Lin Yue, a Shanghai-based independent website consultant. In March 2025, while running a competitor study for a furniture brand, she used Kagi to look up independent designer channels in the UK, Germany, and the US. She opens a few results, compares publication dates and original sources, then saves the useful leads in her own client spreadsheet. She says that once the results are cleaner, she spends less time skipping ads and promotional pages.

To be clear, it isn’t a tool that completes research for me after installation, and it doesn’t guarantee every result is accurate. What it actually saves is the time I’d otherwise spend filtering information.

What it costs to try today, and the first button to click

The barrier to trying it is low, but it isn’t entirely free. Public plan prices change, so I’d check what the payment page shows that day. I’d start with the cheapest monthly option rather than buying a long-term plan immediately. I’d budget roughly $10–$20 and about 10 minutes. The technical barrier is just knowing how to register, make a payment, and use a normal browser—no coding required.

My first step wouldn’t be researching membership perks. I’d open Kagi’s sign-up page, create an account, and go through to payment. After that, I’d search for a question from a client I’m currently serving—for example, “private-domain community case studies for Hangzhou coffee shops”—and use it for three consecutive days. Then I’d compare it with my old search routine: how much time did I save, and did it get me closer to the original sources?

There’s no urgency to try it now. If my search needs are low, regular search plus manual verification may be better value. If I’m only searching two or three times a month, I might not need to spend anything yet.

At each stage, deciding whether it’s worth paying for

If I’m just starting out: I’d use free search for basic queries and treat Kagi as a backup for obscure research, without rushing into a long-term subscription.

If I already have 1–2 clients: I’d choose a monthly plan, focusing on industry reports, competitor channels, and specific client questions. I’d keep source links so I can explain the evidence when delivering work.

If I’m scaling: I’d have the team record search questions and result sources consistently, then decide whether a higher allowance is worth it. If research happens frequently enough, the filtering time saved could be worth more than the membership fee.

I’d try it for three days first, then decide whether it actually saves me time or just becomes one more paid tool.

Kagi
