2 AM Client Email, You're Asleep? OpenAI's New 'Digital Employee' Takes the Shift

That 2 AM Email That Woke Me Up

Last Wednesday, 2 AM — a client email jolted me awake: "Can we revise the contract terms?" Half-asleep, I replied "let's talk tomorrow." By the time I woke up, they'd already signed with someone else.

If you're running a one-person business, you've probably been there. I used to think it was just the cost of going solo — who else is going to cover you?

What OpenAI Just Dropped — "Dots"

At a recent OpenAI event, one thing made me sit up — Dots. Think of it as an "always-on AI employee." It plugs into the tools you already use (email, calendar, forms, Slack — 4000+ of them). You set the boundaries — what it can decide on its own, what needs your approval, what's absolutely off-limits — and then it just runs, 24/7.

One example from the launch stuck with me: an early user had it negotiate with their telecom carrier's support team and saved roughly $500 a year. I haven't tried it myself, but hearing that gave me a jolt — could my own midnight emails have been handled by it first?

(Side note: they also released something called ChatGPT Spaces — basically you and an AI collaborating on a shared whiteboard, like a Notion page with a teammate. Not directly tied to today's topic, so I'm skipping it.)

What Would It Cost Me to Try Today

Bad news first: Dots isn't publicly open yet. The launch just happened, sign-up needs a waitlist, Pro users get priority, US and EU go first, China's rollout is TBD (no specific date given).

  • Money: ChatGPT Pro starts at $20/month (~145 RMB); Business tier costs more. At the launch they said Dots itself won't burn extra conversation credits.
  • Time: Sign-up + setting up boundaries, I'd estimate 30 min to 1 hour (untested — I'll update once it's open).
  • Tech barrier: Basically zero. It's drag-and-drop UI, no code needed — but you do have to think clearly about "what it handles vs. what needs me," and that part is surprisingly brain-heavy.
  • First step: Once it's open, head to chatgpt.com, find the Dots entry, and connect your tools following the prompts.

If You're At… I'd Suggest…

Just starting out (still finding clients): Don't rush. Wait until it's available in China — your reply volume is low anyway, you can handle it yourself.

Have 1-2 steady clients: Keep an eye out, grab a spot the moment it opens. Hand off the repetitive stuff first (quote requests, contract drafts, info gathering).

Scaling a team (3-5 people): This is probably most relevant for you. When it opens, take it seriously — a 24/7 assistant is a quality-of-life game-changer.

One last thing: this is news, not a tutorial — I haven't tried it myself either. When I do, I'll come back with a "what-I-broke" post. We're all grinding out here — don't let launch hype stress you out. Not trying it now is totally fine.
