Indie Dev Builds Workbench, Deliberately Holds Off on AI

An indie developer posted on Juejin that he built "Life Soap · Comprehensive Workbench," with time blocks at 15-minute precision, complete with tasks, energy curves, and holiday calendars. The AI weekly report interface is ready, but he explicitly said "AI automation is on hold for now." What we should pay attention to: while everyone is shouting about AI reshaping workflows, the person who actually did the work chose to let humans go first.

What this is

This is a personal workbench (in the author's words, "currently only has one user"), with time management at its core. The top half is a timeline: the left side shows energy and mood curves, while the middle and right show "planned" and "actual" time blocks, manually addable with titles, categories, and notes. The most interesting detail is the "link to previous block" button — click it, and the new time block's start time automatically equals the previous block's end time.

The bottom half covers task management (one-time + recurring), logs (weekly export), and calendar (automatic sync with national holidays). AI is touched in only two places: first, time blocks use YAML text format for import/export, "to make AI auto-planning easier later"; second, logs support "weekly data export" to feed AI for writing weekly reports. But after hands-on use, the author found himself holding off on the AI part.

On top of that, the site hasn't bought a domain, uses self-signed SSL, requires invite codes to register, and the author explicitly said "won't be open-sourced for now."

Industry view

Supportive voices would say this kind of "personal long-tail" AI tool is the real signal of penetration. Lightweight integrations like YAML text protocols and AI weekly reports prove AI doesn't have to be a large-model rewrite of a product — it can also be a "human first, AI second" workflow patch.

But the dissenting view worth listening to is this: the author himself admits "the buzz around personal workbenches has passed," which creates an interesting intertext with the figure Andrew Ng has repeatedly cited recently (90% of Agent projects get stuck at deployment) — the real bottleneck isn't "adding an AI interface," but whether people themselves are willing and able to actually use it. This author's firsthand experience shows that adding AI to a tool is easy; getting AI to actually participate in decisions is hard, because "energy and mood are hard to quantify."

Another risk: solo project, no security safeguards. The author's judgment that "open-source it and it gets hacked" suggests, in a sense, that an open ecosystem for AI tools is scarcer than the tools themselves.

Impact on regular people

For enterprise IT: indie developers' lightweight experiments are trend-detection balloons, but enterprise-grade AI tools need to solve collaboration, permissions, and compliance — the "open-source-and-it-gets-hacked" security issues — a fundamentally different methodology.

For individual professionals: tool precision down to 15 minutes doesn't mean you're more productive. What's actually valuable isn't the AI weekly report, but the discipline shown by the author — "manually log for months first, then decide whether to let AI take over."

For the consumer market: personal productivity tools are a low-frequency, highly fragmented niche. "Being AI-ified" doesn't rank in users' top three reasons to pay — stability, non-coercion, and control do.
