Last Wednesday, 11 PM, almost blew up a deal with a German client

The client is German—emails all in English. I used some AI tool to translate + rewrite, but the loading spinner spun for almost a minute before anything came out. I was yawning while waiting. Next day when I finally replied, the client was already cold because I'd left them hanging for 5 hours.

I'd hit the same pitfall with OpenAI before: network glitches, slow speeds, charges that make no sense. This is the most common minefield for our small domestic teams using overseas AI.

A French company just dropped a new model: Mistral Large 4

Mistral is a French AI company. You might not have heard of it, but it's already hot in European enterprise circles. My foreign-trade friend Xiaolin (does product selection for export goods) vented to me: last month she plugged the model into her sourcing tool—response speed doubled, price dropped by a third.

Another friend doing cross-border e-commerce, Wang Jie—runs a 4-person team—switched their customer-service script generation from OpenAI to Mistral's API last month. She told me: our tiny team spends under 200 yuan on API a month, and the results are good enough for what we need.

This week they released the latest version, Mistral Large 4—officially faster, cheaper, and supports more languages. European enterprise users are already testing it.

What it actually costs to try today

Money: API price is noticeably cheaper than OpenAI's same tier (check their site for exact numbers). A gut feel: getting AI to rewrite a 500-word email costs under 1 cent; 200 emails a month totals just over 2 yuan.

Time: Pure tinkerer (just want to use it to write stuff): 5 minutes—go to the Le Chat website and sign up. Technical type (want to wire it into your own site or tool): 30–90 minutes, need to know a bit of code—but most non-coders can skip this step entirely.

Technical barrier: "API interface" = lets your site/tool call AI automatically, no manual copy-paste each time. Sounds scary, but non-coders can sidestep it using ready-made aggregators (Poixe, OpenRouter—think "AI tool collection sites").

First step: Open Le Chat (chat.mistral.ai), sign up with an email, free tier works straight away.

Different stages—how we'd choose

If you're just starting out (solo, no stable clients yet): Don't touch API yet. Go to Le Chat, register an account, use it as a free ChatGPT alternative for rewording emails and drafting copy. Zero cost, get moving first.

If you have 1–2 stable clients: Start putting a little money into API credits. If you've got daily repetitive stuff like "send emails, reply to messages," spending 50–100 yuan to wire it in is worth it. I only realized it was worth paying for at this stage myself.

If you're scaling (3+ people): Seriously compare Mistral's cost against other models. Its edge is cheap + Europe-compliant. If your clients are in Europe, lean toward it; if they're domestic, Chinese models like Zhipu or Tongyi may handle Chinese output more smoothly.

At the end of the day, this tool isn't for everyone. If what you're using now works fine, no rush to switch.
