Monday night I opened my AI design assistant — error popup kept appearing
My friend Xiaolin, who runs a Xiaohongshu side hustle, just started using AI to edit Figma. She had 7 cover designs lined up for next week — spent 40 minutes and still couldn't connect.
What actually happened — who's locked out
Figma changed its rules this Monday: only AI tools on an "allowlist" can now read your design files via MCP. The allowlist basically means "only Figma-approved AI tools get in." You can think of MCP as the "translator between AI and Figma" — for AI to auto-edit your file, it has to pass through this checkpoint first.
Pi is among the tools locked out (we've mentioned before how it could edit Figma files directly). Design KOL Gayani confirmed on X this is real — the Pi team is working on a workaround.
In plain terms: if you rely on AI to auto-edit Figma files, your workflow may have quietly broken this week. Tools like Canva and Jishisheji that don't connect to Figma directly are unaffected.
How much it costs you to check today
- Money: $0
- Time: 10–30 minutes
- Technical barrier: open Figma + AI tool, read the error popup
- First step: open your usual AI design assistant, try editing any Figma file, see if it errors out
I made this mistake too — last time I saw an error like this I reset my network and wasted a whole evening. Turned out it was just a permission change. Check early, sleep easy.
Advice by stage
- Just starting / mostly use Canva or non-Figma tools: doesn't affect you yet, don't move.
- Have 1–2 clients / heavily rely on AI-edited Figma: spend 20 min today testing. If it's broken, prep Plan B (manually export Figma images and feed them to AI).
- Scaling / team already runs on AI efficiency: list every AI tool your team uses, spend 10 min monthly checking their Figma connection status — this is "tool dependency" risk, you need backups.
If you don't test today it's fine — but I'd suggest Friday before logging off, so you don't carry the anxiety into the weekend.
