Last Wednesday night I stared at my bill
Last Wednesday night, I was doing the final polish on a client proposal when an OpenAI billing email popped up — another $30+. I stared at that number thinking: if the API were a bit cheaper, would I keep more profit as a solo side-hustler? I made this mistake before — landed a big project, felt great, then at month's end realized AI calls alone ate 30% of my profit. Wanted to kick myself.
What GPT 6.1 Sol is, and who's already on it
OpenAI dropped GPT 6.1 Sol this week — "Sol" means "sun." Performance is close to their flagship Astra model, but at 1/5 the price. My buddy Ajie runs Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) operations in Hangzhou; his monthly GPT spend was almost matching his rent. He told me he's been running it in a test group for a week and said "the viral headline writing is solid — saved me half the cost." Sara, an independent consultant in LA, told me she's about to move client email drafting and first-pass inquiry triage over for a week-long trial.
What it costs you to replicate today
- Money: API calls run around 1/5 of GPT-4o. A long-form article used to cost ~$0.50, now maybe $0.10. ChatGPT subscription pricing cuts haven't been announced yet — wait and see.
- Time: 5 minutes from login to first prompt. If you want to wire it into your existing workflow (Notion AI, Zapier, etc.), budget another half-day tweaking prompts — I bashed it for feeling "downgraded" before I realized I hadn't adapted my prompts. Unfair call on my part.
- Technical barrier: Knowing how to use ChatGPT's web UI is enough. For the API you need a credit card and to generate a key in your OpenAI dashboard (think of it as a "personal key that lets your code call the AI automatically"). Not sure how? YouTube "ChatGPT API tutorial," 5 minutes to grasp.
- First step: Log into chat.openai.com with your current account, check the model dropdown top-left for "6.1 Sol." If it's not there, wait a few days — it's rolling out gradually (meaning in batches, not everyone sees it at once).
How I'd coach three types of people
Just starting out: You don't need to switch right now. Few clients, AI isn't your main expense — wait for the early reviews to settle. This tool isn't make-or-break.
1–2 clients in hand: If your monthly AI spend already tops $100, I'd say carve out 1 hour next week — move daily tasks (copywriting, replies, summaries) over for a few days, compare results, then decide.
Scaling up: If you've got a 3–5 person team using AI daily, run this month's bill right now, forward this to your account admin or agency provider, ask about a bulk switch. The monthly savings buy your team a nice dinner.
