Monday morning, my WeChat groups exploded: "OpenAI just dropped 21 new tools!" I stared at the list. Didn't click a single one.

I Also Got Stuck in the "Chase Every New Tool" Trap

Last year I tried to chase every new tool every week. One month in, I hadn't actually used any of them — burned 20+ hours. I learned the hard way: when a new tool drops, I sit on my hands for 3 days, wait for real reviews. That's exactly what I did with OpenAI's 21 new things this week.

What is Dots? Who's Already Using It?

Dots is OpenAI's "cross-app info organizer" — think AI collecting scattered bits of info for you across your tools. Lao Li (runs a Xiaohongshu personal IP account) watched a 10-min demo and closed it — "doesn't fit my workflow." A Jie (does cross-border product selection) found it mildly interesting, said he'd spend half an hour on it next week. The other 20 tools? Mostly developer SDKs and API upgrades — zero direct impact for us non-coder founders.

My Cost to "Replicate" This Move Today

Money: ¥0, most new tools are free to try. But your attention is money — my hour is worth ¥200.
Time: 30 minutes to an afternoon. If you already have paying clients, cap it at 30 min. If you don't get it in 30, close the tab.
Tech barrier: zero, but you need to tell apart "developer tools" from "regular user tools" — open the website, if every screenshot is code samples, skip it.
First step: don't register. Go to Bilibili or Xiaohongshu, search "Dots review," watch 2-3 real user videos, then decide.

Three Stages, Here's How We Handle It

Just starting out (no stable clients yet): You can spend half a day on Dots, but NOT this week — wait for the first wave of real reviews, less noise. Your #1 job right now is mastering ONE tool you already have, not chasing new ones.

Have 1-2 stable clients: Don't even look. New tools won't make you one extra yuan. Wait until a client asks about it.

Scaling up (team of 3+): Pick the one tool closest to your business, assign it to the most curious tinkerer on your team. After they figure it out, hold a 15-min sync to decide if you'll roll it out.

Bottom line: tools are boats, we're the ones rowing. New boats can wait for calmer waters.
