OpenAI and Anthropic Going IPO — Indie AI Users, Panic?
Last week I had dinner with Xiaolin — she runs a 3-person Xiaohongshu (Chinese Instagram-style social platform) operations agency in Hangzhou. Her biggest fear isn't losing clients — it's her AI tools suddenly disappearing. When she saw OpenAI and Anthropic are both heading to IPO, she specifically messaged me asking: is this good or bad news?
1. Xiaolin's Anxiety Isn't Unique
Xiaolin's 3-person team does Xiaohongshu content ops. The day we had dinner, she had just switched her main AI tool from A to B — because the team behind A suddenly stopped maintaining it. She spends half an hour every week scrolling news, "checking which AI company had another incident."
I've made this mistake too: assuming "big-company tools must be stable." Result: last year some top AI tool changed its pricing overnight, and I had to wake up at 2am to redo client contracts.
2. What These Headlines Actually Mean
Translated to plain English:
① OpenAI and Anthropic are both accelerating toward IPO. For you: that means both have money and longevity. The ChatGPT and Claude you use will most likely still be around next year — they won't just shut down.
② Nvidia spent $6B buying Poolside's license + $1B for an equity stake. Signal: "AI inference (the moment you call AI to do work) is going to keep getting cheaper." The costs you care about may keep dropping.
③ Stripe acquired OpenRouter. Stripe is the tool you use to collect payments; OpenRouter is the middleman layer small AI products use to call models. Merge = smoother billing and stability for the small AI tools you subscribe to.
Shenzhen indie developer Lin Xia said in a group chat last week: "The biggest thing I did this year wasn't growing my following — it was finding a backup for every core tool."
3. What You Can Replicate Today
- 💰 Money: $0
- ⏰ Time: 30 minutes
- 🔧 Barrier: can browse the web, read an official site
- 🎯 First step: Go to your most depended-on AI tool's official site, find "About" or "Company News," and check whether the parent company had any big moves (IPO, acquisition) in the past 12 months.
Don't switch tools today. I suggest making a table: write down the 3–5 AI tools you currently use, and for each, note "if this dies tomorrow, how fast can I switch to an alternative?"
4. Which Category Are You In?
Just starting (clients < 5): Don't act today. Time spent getting clients beats time spent reading AI news.
Have 1–2 stable clients: Spend 10 minutes auditing your tool stack. Move 30% of your work onto top-tier products like ChatGPT or Claude — don't put everything on one small company.
Scaling up (clients > 10 or team of 3+): Actually build a "tool backup list." Find alternatives for your 1–2 most depended-on tools and test them once — so if your main tool dies, you can switch within 24 hours. This is a promise to your clients, not panic.
