Last week Xiaochen (a peer I met back when I was selling info products) told me his AI assistant bill jumped from 200 to 2,000 RMB this month. I asked why — he didn't know either.

I've been stuck here too. Last year I hit the same wall, fiddled with settings for ages before realizing the model had silently swapped to the expensive version.

What's OpenRouter? Why people call it "the router of the AI industry"

If you're just starting (no clients yet): I'd say skip it. Free credits are enough to test which of GPT-4 and Claude suits your taste. Come back when your monthly AI spend crosses 50 RMB.

If you have 1-2 clients: Try OpenRouter's Chat feature to compare different models on the same question. For example, have GPT-4o and Claude each draft a client email and see which feels more natural. That "tool comparison" angle comes in handy when pitching solutions later.

If you're scaling (monthly AI cost over 500 RMB): You probably need to take this seriously. Its "routing" feature lets you auto-use cheaper models during peak hours and better models during off-peak — saves 30%-50%. Or have a tech-savvy co-founder spend a week wiring it up to centralize all your AI calls.
