I spend about 200 RMB a month on ChatGPT, mostly for polishing copy, translating client emails, and drafting meeting notes. Last week I spotted Qwen3.8 27B hitting a 52 intelligence score — roughly on par with early GPT-4 versions, but it's free and open from Alibaba.
What exactly is Qwen3.8 27B? I only just figured this out myself
Qwen (Tongyi) is Alibaba's AI model family. The "27B" means it has 27 billion parameters. Simple version: more parameters = smarter AI, but it also needs more compute to run. That 52 comes from Artificial Analysis — an independent site that scores large models globally. 70+ counts as top-tier paid territory, so 52 lands squarely in the "good enough and cheap" zone.
I made a mistake earlier on this one: I assumed "open-source" meant "I can run it on my laptop." Turns out a 27B-level model needs at least 16GB of GPU VRAM — our regular laptops can't handle it. Good news: Alibaba deployed it on the "Tongyi Qianwen" web version, so anyone can use it directly with zero tech knowledge.

If you're just starting (no steady clients yet): The free version is enough — pour the savings elsewhere. Wait until you're running 10+ tasks a day before thinking about paid.
If you've got 1-2 steady clients: I'd make Tongyi your daily workhorse — let it handle email polish, translation, basic copy. For "can't-afford-to-mess-this-up" jobs like contract wording or key pricing, bring in the paid AI.
If you're scaling up (50+ tasks a day): Look into its API (think of it as "a door that lets other apps call it automatically") — batch tasks can claw back another half of your time. This step needs some tech skill, or grab a friend who knows the ropes and spend 2 hours hooking it up.
One last thing: this tool isn't for everyone. If you only use AI to write two sentences a week, the free ChatGPT tier is plenty. But if you're like me and can't get through a day without AI, don't waste that 100+ RMB you could save.
