This week we noticed an interesting tug-of-war: Tencent's AI coding assistant WorkBuddy rolled out "Buddy Gas Station" — users manually check in every day to raise a virtual cat and earn points, while a developer moved the entire check-in flow onto the CNB cloud in 10 minutes, auto-running at 00:05 every night even with the computer off. Deployment takes four steps: fork the repo, build a separate secrets store holding the JWT login state (login token), export the token locally and upload it, then schedule cloud execution. Tokens need refreshing every 55 days.
Industry view
Supporters see this as a textbook case of cloud-native infrastructure going mainstream — free, zero-dependency, scheduled execution, letting individual developers run "unattended" services. But we see a more troubling side: when AI products start borrowing Duolingo's gamified check-ins to drive daily active users, that's a signal of product anxiety. When an AI coding assistant needs "cat-raising points" to keep people coming back, its core functionality isn't strong enough to make users open it on their own. Even more noteworthy: Tencent's own CNB is being used to automate wool-pulling (exploiting the perks) from Tencent's own product — the compliance boundary between platform and application is currently undefined.
Impact on regular people
For enterprise IT: Free cloud-native build platforms (CNB, GitHub Actions, Vercel Cron) are becoming standard backends — enterprises can evaluate introducing them for lightweight scheduled-task scenarios.
For individual careers: AI tools are increasingly resembling gamified products. In the future, you may encounter "check-in required to use your AI assistant" — that's not a joke, it's a retention strategy product managers are actively testing.
For the consumer market: Check-in point "inflation" will accelerate. Once users automate their way out, vendors will have no choice but to retain users with genuinely useful features — which is actually good news for companies that build real products.
