Last Wednesday at 1am, a client messaged me. I didn't reply.
He'd written at 1am. I was asleep. The next day he told me the problem was already solved — my AI handled it.
What this is: AI on duty while you sleep
An indie developer named Mat Duggan moved his whole workflow into the command line and runs 5 AIs in the background at once. When I saw it I thought: this is basically "intern management for a one-person company."
My friend Mario (freelance designer in Shenzhen) started doing this last year. While she designs in Figma, ChatGPT simultaneously replies to client emails, drafts quotes, and checks contract terms. "I do the work of three people, but without actually hiring anyone," she told me, sitting in a co-working space in Longhua one evening, the urban village lights glowing outside the window.
Then there's Lena (pseudonym, Hangzhou) who runs an indie SaaS. She uses Claude Projects to build a dedicated "AI profile" for each client — whatever they ask, AI responds instantly. "Used to bring my laptop everywhere, even to grab dinner. Now I can go shopping without panicking."
What it costs to copy this today
Money: $0-30/month. ChatGPT Plus ($20) or Claude Pro ($20) is plenty. The complex Make.com version runs about $40/month — skip it at first.
Time: First setup takes 1-2 hours; after that you save 1-2 hours daily. I got stuck here — my first week I built 3 custom GPTs and forgot to use any of them. Cut it down to 1 the next week and it clicked.
Technical barrier: No coding needed, but you have to learn how to "tell AI what to do in one clear sentence." I messed this up too — writing "help me handle client emails" left AI clueless. I had to change it to "when clients ask about contracts, reply politely, payment terms are monthly."
First step: Open ChatGPT → click "Explore GPTs" on the left → click "+ Create" → name it "Client Email Helper" → in Instructions, write three sentences explaining how it should respond → save. You now have your first on-duty employee.
Which setup fits your stage
If you're just starting (0-5 clients): Skip this for now. Get comfortable with basic ChatGPT conversations first; automate once you can't keep up. I made this mistake — adopting tools too early cost me two full days of setup for nothing.
If you have 1-2 steady clients: Try ChatGPT's Tasks or Claude's Projects — one profile per client, so AI remembers the context. Not everyone needs this tool, but if it saves you an hour a day, the subscription pays for itself.
If you're scaling (3+ clients or managing people): Try Make.com + AI Agent — automate the full flow: "client asks → AI replies → I get notified." No rush, but every day you start earlier is a day you sleep better.
