Last week I helped a friend wire up auto-replies — the bill made him hesitate on the spot
My friend Lao Li runs a Xiaohongshu parenting account and asked me to set up an AI auto-reply for him. I went straight for GPT-4o. He saw "pay per usage" and frowned. "How much a month?" I said maybe a few dozen RMB. He said, "let's hold off." — That step I messed up. I should've asked his budget before picking the model.
Z AI cut the price to one-tenth of peers — Zhou Jie in foreign trade tried it first
Z AI, a Chinese company, publicly released GLM-5.3-Flash this week — turns out the mysterious "Ox Alpha" everyone's been whispering about online was this thing all along. The key number: $0.045 per task, 10x cheaper than its peers. Another friend of mine, Zhou Jie, who runs foreign trade, got curious and tested it last week. She was paying $800+ a month running similar tasks on GPT-4o; now it's around $80. But she also flagged: "Cheap doesn't mean all-purpose — for complex reasoning, just pay for the expensive one."
Replication cost: money, time, barrier, first step
- Money: The model itself has a free trial; each task costs a few cents (a few RMB cents). During testing, you won't even spend a milk tea's worth.
- Time: From account signup to first conversation, under 30 minutes.
- Technical barrier: If you can use ChatGPT, you can use this. No coding required — the web chat works fine.
- First step: Go to z.ai, sign up, hit the "Try Now" button on the homepage.
(If you only want AI to help draft copy or reply to messages — no API fiddling needed. The web version is plenty.)
Advice by stage
- Just starting (no clients yet): I wouldn't rush to pay anything. Burn through the free quota first. AI is a tool, not a lifeline.
- Have 1-2 clients: I add a line for "AI tool cost" in client quotes — being upfront tends to land well.
- Scaling up: That's when I get serious about price-comparing. Cheap models like Z AI for batch tasks; keep the expensive model for core creative work.
Last thing: this tool isn't for everyone. Skipping it for now is totally fine — come back when the bill scares you.
