Wednesday Night, I Almost Shut My Laptop
At 10 PM on a Wednesday, I stared at 12 unanswered client emails and almost just closed my laptop and went to sleep. Writing one decent reply takes 5 minutes — 12 means a full hour. I run Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) content operations for clients, and every day I get stuck on this kind of "not brain-heavy but time-heavy" work.
I messed this up before — to save money, I had GPT handle these simple replies. But the output screamed "AI-written," clients spotted it instantly, and I ended up rewriting everything anyway. Slower, not faster.
Anthropic Dropped a New Model Built for This "Cheap Work"
This week Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5. Think of it as "economy class AI" — roughly 5-7x cheaper than the flagship, faster, but the output quality barely drops.
Who's using it? My cross-border e-commerce friend Lin Xiaoman (Shenzhen, home goods niche) swapped 80% of her customer inquiry auto-replies to the Haiku series last week. She told me: "Price questions, shipping questions, return questions — Haiku answers more consistently than my assistant. Customers can't even tell."
I tried it myself: fed it 5 past client emails and had it draft replies. 4 went out unchanged, 1 needed two word tweaks. Saved me at least 40 minutes.
Replicating This Setup: Money, Time, Tech Barrier
- Money: The free tier at claude.ai already includes Haiku — 100 email replies cost a few cents. Paid plan is $20/month (~145 RMB), but unlocks the beefier models too.
- Time: From sign-up to sending your first AI-drafted reply: about 15 minutes.
- Tech barrier: Zero coding needed. Copy emails, paste them in, let it write. If you insist on using the API (the "pipe" that lets AI plug directly into your inbox), you'll need a little technical know-how — or budget ~500 RMB on Fiverr for someone to wire it up once.
- First step: Sign up at claude.ai → log in → click the model dropdown top-left → pick "Haiku 4.5" or "Haiku 5.5" (whichever's available) → paste your first email → add the prompt: "Reply to this client email in a casual voice. No AI clichés."
Is This For You? Depends Where You Are
- Just starting (no stable clients yet): Skip it for now. Play with the free tier, but switch seriously only when you notice "replies eat 2 hours of my day."
- 1-2 stable clients: I'd say try it today. Pull your last 30 days of client emails, have Haiku draft 5 per week, you just edit. Spend the saved time hunting new clients.
- Scaling (5+ clients): Now it's worth spending 500-1000 RMB to get someone to hook up the API and let AI plug directly into your inbox or customer service system (WeChat Work, Qianniu, etc.). This is where Haiku's cheapness becomes real "big savings."
Remember: this tool isn't for everyone. If you only reply to 3 emails a day, just write them by hand. But if you're like me — stuck on "not brain-heavy but time-heavy" tasks — it can genuinely save your sanity.
