Last week I stared at a client's "strategy plan" for three full seconds
Layout too clean, logic too smooth, wording too textbook. I've done content work for 8 years — that taste was off. Eight chances in ten, AI ran a pass.
Any of us running side gigs, consulting, or coaching — who hasn't hit this? Whether the other side actually cares, actually understands — that decides your reputation and repeat business. I used to go on gut feel. Then I found a move I can copy wholesale.
Denmark's education ministry pulled a move this year
They noticed more and more student submissions were AI-generated. On paper, you can't tell. So starting this year, Danish middle schools and universities are layering on one step: every written assignment must come with a 10-15 minute oral defense. Teachers press live: "Why did you write it this way?" "What if the scenario changed?" Can't answer? Marked as plagiarism.
This trick isn't new. My friend Linda in Hangzhou runs Xiaohongshu coaching. Every time she ships a strategy package, next step is a 20-minute Tencent Meeting — client talks through "what you'll tackle first this week, why." Three months in, refund rate dropped 60%.
Even wilder scene: Awei, an indie lawyer in Shenzhen, gives corporate clients a contract template, then has their in-house counsel verbally recap the three "most dangerous clauses and why." One move verifies whether they actually get it; two, it doubles as client education — so when something blows up, they don't blame him.
You can lift this today. Here's what it costs to copy
Money: ¥0 — just one extra oral check in your delivery flow.
Time: 10-20 minutes more per delivery. Filters out flaky clients. Long run: peace of mind.
Tech barrier: Tencent Meeting or Feishu basics. Zero experience needed.
First step: Open your most recent delivery doc, append one line — "Let's book 15 min, I'd love to hear how you plan to use this." Then send it.
Pick the slice that fits your stage
Just starting, no clients yet: Don't add process yet. Next time you do a freebie for a friend, just ask out loud "What's the one thing you most want this to solve?" Practice listening. That's it.
Got 1-2 steady clients: I'd say message your most recent delivery this week, book 15 min. Not to upsell — to set the tone of "we're serious collaborators." Linda's whole system started at this stage.
Scaling, delivery calendar full: Bake the oral check into your contract as an appendix. SOP it. Trigger automatically before each delivery: "Please book your defense slot." I fumbled this step myself — should've templated it half a year earlier. Dragged my feet.
Real talk — this isn't for everyone. If your delivery is already high-touch (coaching, consulting), oral interaction is baked in. But if you ship docs, strategies, course deliverables — one extra round blocks maybe 80% of the back-and-forth headache.
