Chinese Devs Reopened Attention: Inside the 100B-Dollar AI Foundation

In 2017, a Google paper titled "Attention Is All You Need" with just 8 co-authors introduced the Attention mechanism. Eight years on, the global large-model market exceeds $100 billion, and nearly every major product—GPT, Claude, Gemini, ERNIE, Qwen, Doubao—runs on this foundation. This week, a long technical post on Juejin reopened its internals. It's worth 5 minutes even for readers who don't code: it explains why AI gets "distracted" and determines what AI can and cannot do.

What this is

"Attention" literally means focusing. The problem it solves: where should AI focus when processing a piece of information?

Simply put: give AI a passage (say, an earnings report), and it won't treat each token equally. The Attention mechanism scores relevant parts ("revenue," "year-over-year," "percent") high based on your question ("how much growth this year?"), and scores irrelevant parts ("CEO letter," "company history") low, then produces a weighted output.

Its elegance: the same mechanism handles 10 tokens or 1 million tokens. That's why large models have a "context window"—the larger the window, the broader AI's attention span in a single pass.

Industry view

Supporters call Attention one of the most important engineering breakthroughs in deep learning over the past decade. It pulled sequence-modeling efficiency up by an order of magnitude, gave birth to the Transformer architecture (the "master blueprint" of large models), and indirectly incubated the entire generative AI industry. Every AI product we see today—ChatGPT, Doubao, Copilot, Cursor—depends on it at the base layer.

Critics push back just as hard. Meta Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun has long argued Attention isn't enough for true intelligence—we need new architectures like "world models." Academia is also exploring Mamba, State Space Models, and other substitutes. The reasoning is pragmatic: Attention's compute cost scales quadratically with context length—double the input, quadruple the compute. Every "million-token context" AI product on sale is burning massive compute, and there is a hard ceiling.

Impact on regular people

For enterprise IT: when evaluating AI tools, "context window" and "long-document capability" are the same thing—don't let marketing pitch them as separate. "Workaround" solutions like RAG (have AI retrieve from your documents before answering) are popular precisely because Attention has a cost ceiling.

For working professionals: AI's "distraction" is structural. Put key info first, front-load critical instructions, cut redundancy—answer quality jumps visibly. This is the free dividend Attention gives white-collar workers; using it well beats paying for an upgrade.

For consumer markets: whether smart speakers, in-car assistants, or AI hardware "have good memory" is fundamentally an Attention engineering contest. The next wave of product differentiation will almost certainly show up in two Attention-bound capabilities: contextual memory and long-conversation coherence.
