Trained a 100M-Param Model for €100 — Training Got Cheap, Capabilities Didn't

Last week, a Reddit user trained a 100M-parameter BitNet model from scratch for €100. The story is smaller than it looks — and more important than it looks.

What this is

The author used 4 B300 GPUs and under 5B tokens (the minimal units of text a model reads), completing training at roughly €100. The model, called Recursive BitNet N-Gram, leans on three tricks: ternary weights (each parameter is restricted to -1, 0, or +1, drastically cutting memory and compute), shared transformer layers (the core computation block is reused, cutting parameter count further), and 64K context length (readable in a single pass).

Average score across standard benchmarks: 40.59% — marginally above GPT-2, far below any current mainstream model. One detail worth flagging: the author states up front that the release post and model card were written with AI assistance. That's now standard in the open-source community, and it's a signal worth pausing on.

Industry view

There are two ways to read this.

The optimistic reading: the "small model + ultra-low cost" path is now validated. The BitNet route (using minimal-weight representations to slash overhead) has finally landed on consumer-grade GPUs. A €100 training budget means individual developers and small companies can experiment locally with their own variants — no longer tethered to big-tech APIs (cloud interfaces billed per call).

The cautious reading flags three problems. First, a 40.59% test score means it can't replace any mainstream model — "usable" is still some distance away. Second, the author openly admits using AI to write the copy, which means the real "human" bottleneck in this workflow isn't the code — it's the judgment calls. Third, the "train a model for a few hundred euros" narrative has been running through the open-source community for over a year, with near-zero impact on the big-tech competitive landscape — easy to overhype as an industry inflection point.

Our take: the cost curve is real. The capability curve is not.

Impact on regular people

For enterprise IT: not worth betting on short-term. Production environments still run on mainstream commercial models. Experiments like this fit better in R&D scouting and local demos.

For individual careers: the real change is in the cost of trial and error. Fine-tuning (an extra round of training on your own data) a model used to cost tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of RMB. Now it might run a few hundred.

For consumer markets: barely noticeable. Getting these small models into phone assistants, customer service bots, and writing tools will take at least another year or two.
