Too Many Client Projects? This Tool Keeps Them Separate

Monday morning, I nearly sent a client quote to the wrong person

I run a one-person studio in Hangzhou. When my second client came aboard, my computer held quote sheets, assets, temporary passwords, and multiple file versions all at once. Switching to the wrong window or installing the wrong software was routine. I got stuck too: I’d make one small change for a project, then spend 30 minutes confirming, “Which environment am I actually in now?” If projects keep piling up, I wouldn’t blame myself for lacking discipline. More often, the work environment itself has no boundaries.

Devvm.dev gives every project its own “room”

Devvm.dev is a virtual runtime tool. Each project can live in a separate virtual machine with its own files and software settings, like putting scattered desktop materials into separate boxes. Who’s using it? Independent developer Chen Tuo took on a website-maintenance job in Hangzhou in March 2025 and separated the client’s admin panel, test materials, and his main work. He said the biggest change wasn’t speed, but fewer mistakenly sent files. There’s no urgency if you have only one project; for now, it may just be another drawer.

Today’s replica: about $99 and one hour

Based on the current pricing on its official site, preparing a suitable computer costs roughly $99. Initial setup takes about 60 minutes, including roughly 20 minutes to download the software and create the first project environment. The technical barrier isn’t high, but I still had to follow the setup guide for the system image and virtual machine settings. The first time, I entered the client’s full name as the “project name” and only later replaced it with a client code. The first step is simple: open the official site, review the plans and computer requirements, then click to start creating an environment. I wouldn’t migrate everything at once. I’d first get a test project running. For non-coders, the real challenge is deciding which files deserve isolation, not typing commands.

How I’d use it at different stages

If I’m just starting out and my files still fit in one shared folder, I’d create manual folders before adding a virtual machine. Once a client needs an independent environment, I’d migrate then. With one or two clients, I’d pilot one low-risk project for a week and confirm that its software and files remain accessible, rather than moving core work immediately. If I’m scaling and teammates often overwrite each other’s changes, I’d create an isolated environment for each “client—project” pairing and define who can enter it. Still, access controls need to be paired with clear file-management habits. Before spending money, I’d test the free allowance or use an old computer, because a virtual machine isn’t essential for everyone. An independent workflow matters more.

Devvm.dev
