Monday 9 AM, 30 Unreplied Client Emails Staring Back at Me
Last week I opened Gmail and noticed a new Claude button on the right.
Honestly, my first thought was "another AI plugin?" — I'd installed three before and quietly turned them all off. This one's different: Anthropic built it themselves, and it's embedded directly inside Google Workspace.
What Does It Actually Do? Who's Already Using It?
One-liner: when you're writing in Gmail, drafting a Google Doc, or taking meeting notes, click the Claude button in the top-right and it understands what your email/doc is about — rewrites tone, summarizes long threads, drafts replies.
My cousin Lisa runs Xiaohongshu (think Instagram meets Amazon, but Chinese) account management for clients. She vented to me last week: "Clients always send these crazy-long requirement emails, and just seeing them makes me freeze up." After trying Workspace Claude, she told me: she now lets AI summarize first, reads the summary, then replies. A 30-minute job now takes 5.
Same news cycle, Reflection's Beam model also dropped — it's open-weights, meaning developers can build tools on top of it. But for non-coder entrepreneurs like us, the Workspace version of Claude is more practical. Install and you're done.
What Does It Cost to Replicate Today?
Money: Google Workspace Business runs roughly ¥80/user/month (annual billing). Claude for Workspace adds about $10/month (around ¥72) on top. A 3-person team starts at around ¥450/month.
Time: I set it up in 10 minutes — log into Workspace admin → find "Add-ons" → search "Claude" → one-click authorize. Lisa got stuck on the payment step for half an hour — turned out she needed to link a foreign-currency credit card first.
Technical barrier: Zero code, all button-clicking. But you already need a Google Workspace Business account — not a regular @gmail.com personal one. I also went down the wrong path at first; searching "Claude" pulls up a mess of random plugins. The correct route is from the admin console.
First step: Open admin.google.com → "Apps" → "Google Workspace Marketplace" → search "Claude by Anthropic".
Real talk — if your company is still on free Gmail, this feature doesn't apply to you. Don't force it.
What Should Each Stage Do?
If you're just starting out (0–1 clients): I'd skip spending money for now. Free Gmail already has Gemini built in on the right — handles basic email fine. Upgrade once you have 5+ steady clients.
If you have 1–2 long-term clients: I'd try this. If client emails pile up and meeting notes get messy, the few hours saved each month pay for the subscription. Start with monthly billing, not annual.
If you're already scaling (5+ people): I'd have an assistant evaluate first. When client emails are scattered across 5 inboxes, just coordinating is painful — one unified AI helper cuts a lot of confusion.
Oh, and Reflection's Beam model sounds fancy, but right now it's not directly useful for us — unless you know a developer. Check back in six months.
