1 AM: Client Sister Lin Sent a Bug Screenshot
At 1 AM, my client Sister Lin (林姐) sent a screenshot: "The button you built doesn't react when I press it." I couldn't sleep the whole night.
This wasn't the first time — last week Xiao Chen (小陈) mentioned something similar. The next day I traced it: when I tweaked the styles, I missed testing one browser.
Knuth's Old Trick: Getting Users to Tell You What's Broken
Donald Knuth is the godfather of computer science, author of The Art of Computer Programming. His system started in 1968 — whoever first spotted a typo in his books got a real check from him, for $2.56 in "hexadecimal dollars" (Knuth's joke: $2.56 = 0x100 = 256 cents). Recently, Thomas Hühn posted the actual 1992 check he received online.
The core of this system isn't the money — it's getting users willing to tell you where you're wrong. I made this mistake before: when a client reported a bug, I got defensive, felt attacked. Flip the angle — they're saving you the cost of paid QA.
How Much to Replicate This Today?
Money: 0 RMB to start, up to 50 RMB/month if using paid tools
Time: 1 hour to set up
Technical barrier: Feishu or Notion skills — no code needed
First step: Add one line to your product page — "Feedback adopted = a coffee on me" — plus a Jinshuju (金数据) or Tencent Survey link.
Advanced version: Pipe the survey into Feishu Bitable (free). Submissions auto-sync and ping you via Feishu. Check it every morning and you know what to fix.
Advice by Stage
Just starting (personal brand / side hustle): No money needed. Drop one line on your pinned post or product page — "Feedback adopted = a coffee on me." Emotional value beats dollar amount. If you're just starting, I'd begin with a single promise, not tooling.
Got 1–2 paying clients: Build a shared doc (Feishu / Notion), let clients log issues in it. Each month, pick the most valuable report — public shoutout + 30 RMB red packet. If you're at this stage, I'd bake it into the service contract as a long-term mechanism.
Scaling up (5+ person team): Build a proper feedback bounty page with a public prize pool. This is basically the mini version of ByteDance / Alibaba's "vulnerability bounty" programs — it attracts early loyal users to help polish your product. If you're scaling, I'd run it on a Notion + Feishu Bitable + WeChat group bot combo.
