Lock Down Client Keys: Practice Security for Free

My hands were sweating the first time I sent a client a key

Last Tuesday at 10 p.m., I delivered an automated quoting tool to a client in Hangzhou. The configuration file contained access credentials. After sending it in the chat, I suddenly remembered: if I sent the file to the wrong person, the data on their machine could be altered. I stared at the screen for ten minutes, then quickly recalled the message and reset the credentials. That was when I realized security isn’t something you “know” to be careful about. You have to practice it.

What Pwn.college is, and who is already using it

It’s an online “cybersecurity practice ground” that breaks the fundamentals of intrusion into stages: find a vulnerability first, then exploit it, with instructions and feedback for each stage. Chen Hao, a freelance developer in Shenzhen, uses two evenings each week to work through the beginner stages while building customer portals for two small companies. He says he isn’t a security expert, but at least knows which settings he can’t skip. The platform also works well for new team members to practice, though it isn’t a complete enterprise security solution.

Try it today: the budget is low, but don’t skip the learning

Here’s my calculation: direct access costs about 0 yuan; budget 6 hours for registration, choosing the beginner stages, and completing one practice round. The technical barrier is simply following the instructions on the page—no coding required. The first step is to click “Get Started” on the homepage, register for a free account, then choose a challenge marked as beginner level. I wouldn’t rush to complete everything. If I can clearly explain “why credentials should be stored separately” and “what to do first when receiving a suspicious email,” I’ve already gained something worthwhile.

Match the practice to where your work is now

If I’m just getting started and don’t have stable clients yet, I’d spend an hour reviewing common mistakes, then turn on two-factor authentication for my existing computer and email. It’s fine not to try it now; I can learn once I start handling real client data. If I already have 1-2 clients, I’d set aside an afternoon to complete the beginner stages and separate account credentials, customer files, and delivery permissions. If I’m scaling, I’d have each team member take turns practicing, while bringing in a real security professional to review permissions and backups. The platform can fill gaps in my knowledge, but it can’t take responsibility for security on my behalf.

Pwn.college
