Stripe Paid $7B for an 'AI Takeout Platform' — Why Your Side Hustle Cares

Last weekend I found out there's been a "dispatcher" behind my AI tools the whole time.

Running my side hustle for two years, I grumble at my AI bill every month

Copywriting on ChatGPT, images on Midjourney, customer service on Claude. Every month when the bill lands, I grumble — why so much again? When I saw Stripe paid $7B to acquire OpenRouter last weekend, I realized: the AI industry is way deeper than I thought. Someone's been doing "dispatching" in the middle, and I just never dug into the basics. I made this same mistake too: I directly subscribed to the priciest GPT-4, when 80% of my questions didn't need it.

What is OpenRouter? Why did Stripe pay $7B?

Simply put, it's an "AI takeout platform" — you order, and it picks the cheapest, good-enough "chef" from GPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama to cook for you. My friend Xiao Li, who runs an independent consulting practice, bragged to me: "All my AI calls go through OpenRouter. Same question, Claude via OpenRouter costs half what direct GPT costs, and the results are nearly identical." OpenRouter hit $140M annual revenue with 70% gross margin — more profitable than many listed companies. What Stripe saw is this: "AI models themselves" aren't worth much. "The dispatch layer" is.

How you can borrow this trend today

Money: $0 (just understanding the trend, no subscription needed). Time: 5-10 minutes. Technical barrier: no coding required — you just need to know "am I using GPT or Claude?" First step: open openrouter.ai and check out the model list and pricing on the homepage.
Why does this matter to us? Next time I pick an AI tool, I can ask the seller: "Which model is under the hood? Can I switch?" — nobody used to ask this. Now we can, because we know there's a whole company doing this layer.

Advice by stage

Just starting out (never used an AI tool): No rush. When I write my first Xiaohongshu post or my first product intro, I try the free version of ChatGPT or Kimi. Plenty good enough.

Got 1-2 clients (already using AI tools): If you're like me and spend over ¥100/month on AI, I'd spend 10 minutes checking which model powers the tools I subscribe to. If it's GPT-4, ask if I can switch to something cheaper (GPT-4 mini or Claude Haiku, etc.) — you could save a few bucks a month.

Scaling up (spending over ¥500/month on AI): I'd seriously look into aggregator platforms like OpenRouter. Or get my "tech-savvy friend" to hook it up for me — might save 30%. Not required, but ¥500 is enough for another dinner out.
