What this is
On October 10, OpenAI brought Dots to mobile — a step that takes the new "resident AI employee" category from desktop to pocket. Lined up against the September trio of Meta Muse, Manus Cue, and OpenAI Dots, this competitive race is barely a month old.
Three things in this Dots update matter. First, what used to be desktop-only — creating a Dot — is now possible directly inside the iOS/Android ChatGPT app: build, name, and connect to 4,000+ apps. Second, Dots can dispatch persistent tasks — e.g. "maintain project status, track deadlines, ping me only when there's risk" — not one-off Q&A. Third, developers can invoke Codex (OpenAI's code-generation model) through Dots: rewrite-the-backend-in-Rust jobs get sent from the phone, run in the cloud, and ping you when done.
Step back, and the more interesting story is divergence: Muse goes life-butler + WhatsApp entry point; Cue goes digital twin (giving the AI its own email, phone, and wallet); Dots goes workflow + developer. Three sub-tracks, not one race.
Industry view
The bullish camp reads this as the clearest turning signal in the industry: with model-layer upside maxing out, competition moves to the "execution layer" — whoever holds the 24-hour resident position in users' lives wins the next gateway. Embedding Codex inside Dots is a smart OpenAI defensive play, since both Muse and Cue have weak coding chops, and Dots grabs the high-stickiness developer cohort. Manus, as the domestic alternative, has an iteration pace worth tracking.
The bear case is equally sharp. First, the safety perimeter: Cue gives AI an independent email, phone, and wallet — when permissions go sideways, who bears liability is unanswered. Second, real-world readiness: resident agents still need cross-app permission bridging, stable long-horizon memory, and error recovery; all three players are early. Third, the cooler take worth hearing: packaging AI as an "employee" is sexy, but most people's work simply doesn't have that much automatable long tail — this could end up as a $200/month premium reminder tool.
Impact on regular people
For enterprise IT: Phone-dispatch, cloud-execute coding means engineering tasks no longer require engineers to be parked at their desks to make progress — the Codex Cloud line is a real change to distributed-team R&D cadence.
For individual careers: White-collar workers will first get value from Dots' cross-app coordination (email + calendar + todos in continuous sync), but only if they're willing to grant account access to AI — granularity and audit mechanisms are something to watch closely in the short term.
For the consumer market: What actually disrupts daily life is the Meta Muse line (ordering food, booking tickets, WhatsApp entry); Dots remains developer-leaning, so ordinary consumers will need another six months or so before they directly feel this wave.
