Last Wednesday night, I almost blew a client project
I was revising a proposal. The client had a similar issue I'd helped with six months ago — but I couldn't remember how I'd had ChatGPT answer it back then.
ChatGPT's conversation history has been on by default
OpenAI shipped this feature ages ago: every chat you have with it stays by default, grouped in the left sidebar by time (Today / Yesterday / Previous 7 Days), just like WeChat chat history. I always hit "New chat" to start fresh, never realizing those groups on the left were clickable.
A friend in my circle, Xiaomin — she runs a Xiaohongshu (Chinese Instagram-ish) personal brand — told me about her find last week: she'd had ChatGPT write product copy for her last year, thought it was meh at the time. This week a client wanted something in a similar style. She scrolled back, tweaked two paragraphs, shipped it. Saved her two hours.
Indie developer Lao Wang goes even further: every time he wraps a technical chat with ChatGPT, he pastes the link into Yinxiang Note (Evernote's Chinese sibling). Over a year, he's stashed 600+ links — basically his own "technical decision log."
Cost to replicate today
Money: 0. ChatGPT free tier includes history; Plus users ($20/mo) get it too.
Time: 10 minutes. Open the web, glance at the sidebar, click in and try.
Barrier: If you can scroll WeChat chat history, you can do this. I got stuck too: first time I couldn't find the entry — it's the "Today" / "Previous 7 Days" groups in the sidebar, click in and you're there.
First step: Open chatgpt.com, log in, check whether the sidebar has those time-grouped buckets. Click "Previous 30 Days" and see if your past chats are there.
Advice by stage
Just starting (still chasing your first client): If you're new to ChatGPT, I'd suggest starting today: every chat that feels useful, hit the share icon top-right, paste the link into Feishu (Lark) or Yinxiang Note. Future you will thank present you.
Got 1-2 steady clients: I'd suggest creating one page per client in Yinxiang Note, archive chat links by client. Mistake I made: back then I figured "AI answers are throwaway." Three months later, I needed to reuse them, couldn't find a thing.
Scaling (team of 3-5): I'd suggest teaching this workflow to everyone on the team, set a weekly slot to tidy the conversation library. Not everyone needs this tool, but if someone on your team keeps asking ChatGPT the same questions weekly, this saves time directly.
No pressure to try today — but next time you think "didn't I ask ChatGPT something like this before?", check the sidebar first.
