My palms went cold when I saw this yesterday

I've been indie hacking for two years. OpenRouter has been my universal switch for hooking into every AI model out there (GPT, Claude, Gemini). When I saw the news that Stripe reportedly acquired OpenRouter, my first reaction was — will my free credits disappear?

Quick context: OpenRouter is basically an AI model supermarket. One signup, one API key, and you can call dozens of models. No need to apply separately at OpenAI or Anthropic. For non-coders, this kind of middleman means you can use any major model without touching code.

What's actually happening, and who's already nervous

My content-creator friend Zhou (Guangzhou, 30, freelance writer) already asked on Jike (a social app popular in China): "Should I export my OpenRouter usage records just in case?" He uses Claude through OpenRouter every month to draft article outlines — spending a few thousand RMB a year.

OpenRouter is the "AI model middleman" — saves you from negotiating API access with each provider. Stripe does payments (you've used it if you've ever collected money for an indie product). Now Stripe wants to absorb this AI supermarket. Two possible outcomes: either they integrate resources and we small users get better service, or they restructure, kill the free tier, jack up prices. Nobody knows yet, so everyone's watching.

Should you do anything today?

Money: Just watching = $0. Trying OpenRouter yourself = free signup, a few dollars in monthly credits.
Time: Reading the news = 5 min. Getting started = 30 min.
Tech barrier: No coding needed. A few clicks on a webpage.
First step: Go to openrouter.ai, sign in with Google, click "Models" at the top to see pricing.

If you've never used OpenRouter, this doesn't directly affect you. Tools like ChatGPT web, Cursor, Notion AI might route through OpenRouter on the backend — if so, you could feel indirect effects. But that's all speculation right now. I also got stuck wondering whether to migrate early. After thinking it through, doing nothing won't end the world.

Advice by stage

Just starting out: Don't worry about this yet. Pour your energy into building your product. AI tools will keep evolving on their own — no rush to try OpenRouter now.

Got 1-2 clients: If your workflow already depends on a specific AI model (say, locked-in Claude), spend 5 minutes screenshotting which model and price you're using. If you ever need to switch (e.g., direct OpenAI access), you'll thank yourself for the records. I made the mistake of not tracking usage data once, and ended up staring blankly when I had to swap models.

Scaling up: Seriously evaluate whether to negotiate enterprise contracts directly with OpenAI or Anthropic, skipping the middleman. Middlemen give you flexibility but charge a small premium. Once your usage climbs, that premium adds up fast.
