Your Client Calls Might Be Bugged
Last week, I was at a cafe discussing a quote with a client. After hanging up, I broke into a cold sweat—this regular call had zero encryption. The University of Toronto's Citizen Lab just released a report exposing massive surveillance vulnerabilities in global telecom networks. Attackers don't even need to touch your phone; they can intercept calls and texts just by exploiting carrier backends. I also used to think, 'I'm not a big shot, who would listen in?' I had that exact mindset before, but the report shows small business owners and freelancers are being targeted—because your client lists, quotes, and contract details are pure gold to competitors.
Signal: Free Encrypted Calling Tool
Signal is an open-source messaging app where calls and messages use end-to-end encryption—meaning even Signal's own company can't decrypt your content. My designer friend Ajie was on a business trip in Bangkok last year and used hotel Wi-Fi plus Signal to confirm an 80,000 RMB design proposal with a client back home. The whole process bypassed the local telecom network. He later found out someone on the same floor was piggybacking on the telecom signal for corporate espionage. Nowadays, many independent consultants and cross-border freelancers default to 'only using Signal for real business.'
Start Using It Today
Cost: $0. Time: 5 minutes to download and register. Technical barrier: If you can use WeChat, you can use this—zero barrier. First step: Open your phone's app store, search for 'Signal,' download it, and register with your phone number. The other person also needs to install Signal to make encrypted calls, so send the download link to your frequent clients or partners first.
Advice by Stage
If you're just starting out and haven't encountered sensitive call scenarios yet, it's fine not to install it now; just knowing this tool exists is enough. If you have 1-2 clients, especially for negotiations involving quotes and contract details, I'd suggest telling them, 'I usually make calls on Signal; the audio quality is better and it's more secure'—most people are willing to install one more app. If you're scaling up and your team frequently communicates across different locations, Signal group calls support up to 5 people for free, saving you money compared to buying an enterprise communication plan. However, this tool isn't for everyone; if you only use WeChat voice for daily chats domestically, there's no need to switch right now.
