Lost membership cards again? Apple has a free 5-min digital version
Last Wednesday, A-Lin's yoga studio hit another snag
Last Wednesday, my friend A-Lin vented to me: someone at her yoga studio lost their membership card again.
I'm not A-Lin, but I get that frustration — especially when you're running a side hustle or small studio. Dozens of membership cards floating around, and every time someone asks "where's my card?", you spend half an hour digging through chat history.
So what is Apple Pass Designer? Who's already using it?
It's a free design tool from Apple, at developer.apple.com/pass-designer. Open it up and you can design a digital card that lives in your customer's "Wallet" app — without writing a single line of code.
I made this mistake before: assumed you needed a developer to pull it off. You don't.
Real people are already using it. A friend of mine, Lao Zhou, runs private fitness coaching — last month he made digital membership cards for his 12 students. They scanned a code, added it to Wallet, never lost it again. Baking blogger "Xiaolin's Kitchen" turned her private class sign-ups into Passes; once a customer pays, she just sends a link and done. A Taipei indie coffee shop called "Banlou" went even earlier — they digitized their stamp cards too.
What does it cost to replicate today?
Money: $0, totally free.
Time: First try takes ~15 min to figure out; second one, 5 min flat.
Technical barrier: just click and drag with a mouse. No email signup to even enter the designer.
First step: open developer.apple.com/pass-designer in your browser and click the orange "Try the Pass Designer" button.
⚠️ Here's a trap I fell into, fair warning: this tool is only the "designer." Once your Pass is built, you still need to "sign" it (think: stamp of approval) before you can actually send it to customers. That step needs an Apple Developer account — $99/year. But if you just want to see what it looks like and mock up a few samples, you can run through the whole flow at zero cost.
How to use it at different stages?
If you're just starting out (no real customers yet):
Don't worry about trying it now. I bookmarked this tool first and only actually built something once I had a real student sign up. Save your energy.
If you already have 1-2 customers:
I'd suggest spending 15 min trying it once. Even if you don't send it out, make yourself a digital business card and drop it in your own Wallet just to get the feel. Next time someone signs up, you'll be a step ahead.
If you're scaling:
This tool alone won't do much, but it slots into your future "bulk send tools" and "membership systems" — like CRM, auto-coupon sending, it becomes one puzzle piece. Just know it's there.
